Conglomerate Press Corporation Limited (PCL) on November 25, 2013 donated hospital beds for the maternity wing of Monkey-Bay’s Community Hospital in Mangochi.

PCL Group Operations Executive Pius Mulipa said the donation of the 10 beds was a start of a relationship with the hospital and indicated that more assistance in the areas of need identified by the community hospital would be considered in future.

“As you are aware, some of our subsidiary companies like Peoples Trading Centre (PTC), Carlsberg Malawi and Maldeco Fisheries have some of their operations in the Monkey-Bay area. We also have cottages in the same area. As such most of our employees and their families who are around Monkey-Bay come to this hospital for medical attention.”

“We sent our people to find out the needs of the hospital and we were told that the hospital lack beds especially in the maternity wing and that is why we are here donating the beds,” said Mulipa.

District Health Officer for Mangochi Dr. Ethwako Mlia-Phiri thanked PCL for the donation saying the beds will go a long way in assisting expectant mothers at the hospital and promote safe motherhood where pregnant women are encouraged to deliver at hospitals than using traditional birth attendants.

“There are several challenges this hospital is facing and we hope that PCL will not be tired of helping us, we know that you will come again to help us so that we serve our patients better,” she said.

Among the officials that attended the ceremony included PCL Group Executive (Special Assignments) Andrew Sesani, Company Secretary and Compliance Officer Bernard Ndau, Maldeco General Manager Ken Mthuzi and several staff members from PCL Corporate Head Office and Maldeco Fisheries.

PCL has interests in different sectors of the Malawi economy including financial services, telecommunications, food and beverage, energy and consumer goods.
