Malawi Telecommunications Limited (MTL) Ladies group donated assorted items valued at K500,000 to Chisombezi School for Blind & Deaf in Chiradazulu. This centre admits children that are both blind and deaf. The donation was aimed at meeting some of the needs at the centre.

Hilda Singo, MTL’s Company Secretary and Patron for the MTL Ladies Group in her speech said her company was concerned with the plight that the centre was going through and MTL management in conjunction with MTL Ladies group decided to give a helping hand to the school. She also commended the school’s management for the tireless effort and love given to the disabled children in teaching and training them. She said MTL’s Corporate Social Responsibility policy is aimed at giving back to society through health, education and environment. The gesture at Chisombezi is one way of fulfilling MTL’s Corporate Social responsibility.

Last year a similar occasion happened at Kachere Rehabilitation Centre. Singo expressed concern that many people neglect the needy in communities of which she said MTL was keen about as this is part of the CSR policy."As MTL we also want to raise awareness of the physically challenged in communities and also call upon other organisations to support the centre and other groups that are needy. These children are the future of our country and will be able to contribute to its development when some of us have grown older, they will take over“ Singo said. Amongst the items donated were two wheel chairs, blankets, material for school uniforms, buckets, maize flour, Likuni Phala, beans and many more. She continued to say this was one way of giving back to the society and promised that there will be many more visits to come; helping the disadvantaged.

The District Commissioner for Chiradzulu, Bennet Nkasala graced the occasion and thanked MTL at the same time called upon other organisations to come forward and support the centre. Nkasala said disability was not inability and added that such children are capable of contributing greatly to the country's development in future. Sister Emma Kulombe also thanked MTL for alleviating the centre from the suffering they were going through and said the support will go a long way in minimising the problems.

She also clarified that Chisombezi was not a school for the deaf and blind , but a school for both blind and deaf as such only children who had a combination of blindness and deafness are accommodated there. "You should be aware that apart from being blind and deaf some of these children are mentally challenged and lack many things. We are trying hard to shape their lives and God bless MTL for assisting us", she said, while holding back her tears. The school was founded in 2003 with Sister Kulombe as founder together with Servants of the Blessed Virgin Mary (SBVM). Currently the school has 18 residential pupils and 7 day scholars.
